This delightful climbing plant requires a warm conservatory in the winter months, but in summer it provides its exquisite display as a patio specimen. Best grown in pots to move inside in the winter, Mandevilla sanderi ‘Bloom Bells® have dark, glossy, evergreen leaves to provide year-round interest. But it is the gorgeous, trumpet shaped blooms that provide a fanfare throughout the summer.
This beautiful plant, formerly known as Dipladenia, is perfect for twining up a pyramid of canes or an obelisk. A climbing perennial, it will give an increasingly beautiful display year after year. They will reach a height of 150cm (59″) and a spread of 100cm (39″) so are quite manageable indoors and out.
Mandevillas or Rocktrumpets were originally native to the Southwestern United States, Mexico, Central America, the West Indies and South America. The ‘Bloom Bells’® Series are superior breeding. The colours available include pink, white and red, or the three can be mixed together to create a multi-coloured vine, as pictured at the top of the article.
Plants should be potted in a soil based compost with good drainage such as John Innes No2. They need a minimum temperature of 10°C (50°F). They prefer a bright position, but with some shelter from the hottest midday sun. If placed on the patio during the summer months, they should be returned indoors before the first autumn frosts. Plants should be fed and watered regularly throughout the growing season, but sparingly during winter. Prune the plants after flowerinng to within three or four buds from the previous year’s growth.
