Mulberry Charlotte Russe is a breeding breakthrough. If you wanted to grow mulberries in the past you would have had to have been able to accommodate a large tree up to eight metres in height. This plant however is a dwarf mulberry bush which will only reach the height of one and a half metres, and therefore is suitable for a much more compact space. This exciting introduction was named Plant of the Year at the 2017 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. This fully hardy plant is self-pollinating and fruits on both old and new wood, and so will fruit within the first year. This is amazing as previous large trees could take up to nine years to bear fruit. Mulberry Charlotte Russe also produces fruit over a much longer period, from May to September, as opposed to fruiting for a few weeks like previous varieties.
You are unlikely to find mulberries for sale in your local supermarket in the U.K, so the chance to grow them in our small to medium size plots is a joy. Mulberry Charlotte Russe is simple to grow in pots and borders and produces delicious seedless fruit. It prefers a position in full sun. The plant is attractive to birds, bees and butterflies.
Mulberries have long been thought to have royal connections since they were more widely introduced by James the first in 1609. The National Collection of over 30 varieties of mulberries is planted in the grounds of Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and Marlborough House. This new variety has been named after Queen Charlotte, wife of George the third.
