Hyacinths are often thought of as a houseplant for indoor colour from Christmas onwards.  Whilst these forced arrangements can provide welcome decoration during a time when there is little garden colour, we must not forget the joy of Hyacinths in the garden, both in borders and containers. These beautiful bulbs burst up through the soil to provide us with some of spring’s most sumptuous blooms and often delicious fragrance.

In recent years collections of bulbs have been made available to us that are curated by the experts for complimentary colours and identical flowering times. Tulips have been made available in these collections and Daffodils, and now Hyacinths are becoming available to us in this way. Below I have showcased some of the very best of these offerings.

Hyacinth ‘Berries and Cream Mixture’

This collection is pictured at the top of the article. Make your spring bulb display stand out from the crowd with Hyacinth ‘Berries and Cream Mixture’. This spectacular mix creates a harmonious blend of rose, violet, pink and pale lavender, instead of the usual shades of blue and purple. Perfect for filling beds, borders and containers with a riot of spring blooms and that characteristic, heady, hyacinth fragrance. Height: 25cm (10″). Spread: 8cm. (3″).

Hyacinth ‘Rhapsody in Blue’

This elegant mix of Hyacinths makes a refined spring display. Hyacinth ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ brings together cool blues and contrasting brilliant white blooms with a distinctive and powerful perfume. Perfect for filling beds, borders and containers with spring colour and fragrance that will return year after year. Height: 20cm (8″). Spread: 15cm (6″).

Hyacinth ‘Pretty in Pink’ Mix

What could be better than a trio of colour-coordinated Hyacinths to welcome the spring? Hyacinth ‘Pretty in Pink’ Mix is a sumptuous blend of raspberry, candy-pink and white blooms to create a dazzling display in your beds and borders. No Hyacinth display would be without its distinctive and powerful perfume, so brace yourself for a sensory overload! Plant them in windowboxes and patio pots if you prefer your flowers close at hand. You can even cut a few for a vase indoors! Height: 20cm (8″). Spread: 15cm (6″).

Hyacinth ‘Breeder’s Selection’

As with all breeding programmes, only a handful of varieties are selected for commercial production and the bulbs that are discarded are often unique and spectacular in their own right. Thompson & Morgan are privileged to offer you a unique collection of supreme hyacinth bulbs, specially selected by the breeder. More compact that many varieties, these hyacinths have shorter stems that are densely packed with colour-rich flowers and a powerful scent. Fantastic for spring displays in borders or containers indoors. Hyacinth flowers make lovely cut flowers too. You can’t buy these bulbs from anywhere else! Height: 20cm (8″). Spread: 8cm (3″).
